Environmentally Friendly Funerals

The eco alternative

Rosedale Funeral Home is a Founder Member of the Association of Green Funeral Directors, an organisation formed in 2009 to encourage funeral directors to become more green-minded in all aspects of their work and to help bring natural funerals into the mainstream.

Green Team

We are particularly proud to work closely with the Green Team from Wymondham High School, with whom we have developed a range of environmentally friendly ashes caskets.

Options include papier-mache, cardboard, willow, dissolvable salt urns and bamboo, alongside the more traditional wooden urns which are made only from wood from sustainable sources.

Increasingly we are asked to advise families on environmentally friendly options and this can mean many things – reducing your carbon footprint, using local suppliers, using sustainable resources and ensuring Fair Trade for all.  As a result we offer traditional coffins that are made with wood from sustainable sources that have the FSC certification.

In addition, we have developed a range of coffins that are kinder to the environment than traditional options, including cardboard, bamboo, pine and willow and a lovely design made from wild pineapple leaf.   The coffins that are sourced from abroad have been awarded Fair Trade status and the transportation is organised in such a way that no more fuel is used than for a car journey of under 5 miles.

Burial is more environmentally friendly than cremation, especially if you choose a local cemetery or churchyard.  Woodland burial grounds offer a natural alternative to conventional burial and cremation options, and we work closely with Colney Woodland Burial Park where burials take place in circles around trees in a mature woodland setting and all the memorials in the burial park are biodegradable.
